With their EP „Fenriir“, Norwegian black metallers NORDJEVEL have stirred up anticipation for their next album. Singer Doedsadmiral explains in an interview how the EP format came about, why they chose to cover the death metal song „Fallen Angel“ by Possessed and what he misses most about touring at the moment.

How are things going with Corona in Norway at the moment?
Up and down, now they are letting up a bit on the restrictions, besides that nothing happens.

Let’s talk about something more enjoyable: your new EP. In this age of streaming, is an EP a very outdated format because it’s a typical physical format or a very modern one, since people don’t have the patience anymore to listen to full albums?
Normally EP`s are not that common maybe anymore. Often they can be uninspiring and boring. That is why we decided to create at least something unique for this EP.

There is one track from the upcoming album on the CD. So the studio material on the EP comes entirely from the recordings for the upcoming album?
Yes and no. Only track from the upcoming album is Gnawing The Bones. The 2 others are only available for this EP, that includes the Possessed cover and the live version of Det Ror Og Ror

Is the sound/mix of the EP thus also that of the album, so will the song be unchanged on the album and the EP already gives glimpses here, or is this a premix and the album material will sound different?
The EP has it`s own mix, the upcoming album will have it`s very own mix. Gnawing The Bones will have the same structures, but will be abit altered on the album.

The song is the rawest of the EP – is that also representative for the album, will it be harder?
Yes, and no. We`re actually writing the music as we feel there and then. But for sure, it`s intense music on the upcoming album, but also the calmer more melodic stuff, epic stuff.

Why did you decide to put the two songs that are exclusive on the EP not on the album but to release them separately?
They where written actually a few years ago, and they hold a unique atmosphere, that never really fitted any albums. So, when the recordings of the new album was delayed. We saw this as an opportunity to give people something while waiting, and then these 2 tracks where the motivation to release the EP.

All in all, I find the material more organic and atmospheric than the songs on the last album. Can you understand that, and if so, how would you explain that? Have you found yourselves as a band now after the big line-up change?
We don`t really write according to any plan. But, we have now played together a long time already, and start to become a unity. We all work in the same free direction, and that is the unique thing in the band nowadays.

Looking back, how do you see the last album – compared to the debut, but also to where you are as a band today?
I’m proud of both albums. First one being more norwegian and melodic. Last one darker and more aggressive. They represent different eras of Nordjevel. We where never interested in writing Nordjevel Part.II and copying ourselves, so we want to stride forwards, not backwards.

There is also one cover-song on the EP. Why did you decide to cover this special track – a death metal hymn. Have you been playing it as a band in the rehearsal room for a while, or did you learn it for the recordings?
First, we’re all fans and have tremendous respect for Possessed. Also they have become our friends after we where on tour with them. So, it was natural for us to cover this track.

What do you think about covering in general – do you play other bands‘ songs more often for fun, or do you prefer to focus on your own material?
Normally we focus on our own material. There are some classics that are cool to play in our own style, like we did with the Possessed track. Covers can be very cool, but needs to be done the right way.

As a fan yourself, do you like it when other bands cover songs, live or even on EPs?
If I like the band, I think all of it is cool. If done the right way

And last but not least there is also a live-track on the EP, recorded at the Brutal Assault. What memories do you have of the show? After all, you had big technical problems and then you also had to play at the same time as Emperor…
Energy wise this was one of our best show, technical problems where only in the beginning. Not only Emperor, but also Taake. Good planning to have 3 norwegian black metal bands at the same time at the same day. To our surprise our venue was packed and beyond.

In general, what do you miss most about touring?
The energy, the rawness, the frustrations, the uncomfortable. The drive and passion for what we do, and why we do it. The fans, and the people around it.

Did Corona have „positive“ side effects as well? How did you use the concert-free time?
I wouldn’t say positive now. We have had to cancel many shows and postpone. The new album was almost finnished written when corona came. Maybe we have now had more time, to work on it. So, exept that, more negative effects really.

Thank you very much for the interview. Let’s wrap it up with our traditional brainstorming:
Germany: Berlin
Last album you listened to: Funeral Mist-Salvation
Megadeth: Rust In Peace
