Interview mit Christian Bonnesen von LLNN

Deutsche Version lesen

„Deads“ is the second album of the danish Post-Metal-Band LLNN and after a Split-release with Wovoka the first release on Pelagic Records. A real masterpiece in atmosphere, inspired by the movie soundtracks of the eighties. There are several unique selling points in the sound of the band we want to talk about with guitarist and vocalist Christian Bonnesen.

Thank you very much for taking some time to answer my questions. How are you?
No problem, man. I’m doing fine, thank you!

In case some of our readers haven’t heard much about you yet, please introduce yourself and describe your musical vision in a few words.
My name is Christian and I play guitar and sing in LLNN. LLNN is your favorite 70/80’s soundtrack played by hardcore musicians.

What’s the meaning of the band’s name and how do you pronounce it?
It’s two L’s and two N’s. Seek the two moons of Planet Mongo to learn the true meaning.

Are you happy with the feedbacks you got for „Deads“ from fans and press so far?
Most definitely. It has blown my mind to be honest. After we recorded the record I thought we had a really good record on our hands, but the reception still suprised me. I’m thankful!

Is there any special concept behind „Deads“. If there is, what’s the idea behind it?
Sure. Lyrically the theme of the record is about subjugation and the not so ideal use of power by people with power.

Please tell us something about the artwork of „Deads“. Is it your own design concept?
It’s based on photos by our drummer Rasmus. He’s a really gifted photographer. If I recall it correctly the cover is a jellyfish, but it looks like a huge crater on the moon. I think that captures the vibe of the record.

Some of the electronic elements and interludes sound like film soundtracks (e. g. John Carpenter or Marco Beltrami) from the eighties or early nineties. Are you influenced by stuff like that?
Most definitely. We are kids of the 80’s. We got those soundtracks in our DNA.

Please explain the songwriting process. Is it collective work or are there only one or two of you involved?
It’s collective. Writing a song with LLNN is like creative problemsolving to me. We have a synth melody/riff/rhythm… How do we transform that into a song? That’s usually how it starts. We jam a lot!

You have a hardcore background and now synthetic elements are an integral part of your songs. How does that affect the way you work on music?
Well, it opens a lot of new creative doors for us and makes us approach music in different ways. It’s like being a painter and all off a sudden having all the colors of the world at your disposal!

What environment do you need to write music? Where do you write your songs?
Just at our rehearsal space. Not very sexy!

The sound on „Deads“ is very heavy, cold and some kind of mechanical… was this a partial result of your work with Tue Madsen?
Well, he certainly had a hand in it, but he only mastered the record (and did one hell of a job I might add) – But most of it is Jacob Bredahl who recorded and mixed us. We recorded live, so it’s also a pretty close estimation of our live sound!

Please name an old album (before 2000) and a new album (after 2000) you still love or you are influenced by.
„Venom“ by Breach and „White Silence“ by Cave In.

What are your plans for 2019 so far?
A lot of shows!

Now I’d like to go through our traditional Metal1.info-Brainstorming with you. What comes to your mind while reading the following terms?
Donald Trump:
Tired of hearing about him.
Terminator:

Justin K. Broadrick:

Global Warming:

Some final words for our readers?
